Where I want to go from here?

Almost a decade ago I did Marketing as a module for my diploma. And I’ve been trying to expand my knowledge in this field ever since. However during those days, everyone seemed to be doing Marketing and I was somehow “brain-washed” that the Financial sector is the “in” thing then. Hence my diploma in risk and insurance management. However from then till up to today, finance and insurance are the last thing that I would want to get my feet in. Its not that I don’t see potential in it, in fact, this is one of those sector that those who are good, will excel. But I just don’t have the interest, not even a tiny bit.

However, after graduation from the polytechnic, my mind wasn’t focusing at the right way. I followed my mind instead of my heart. Was presented with four different journeys then, at which I took the one I thought would be the most interesting and would give me the opportunity to continue being a student and still get paid. Only after wasting 5 years of my prime years then I realised how much I’d lost.

After researching and studying the market trend now and the future, I see the need for me to get a Degree and in the field of marketing and communication, where I had the most interest in. With leading media companies such as SPH (SPH/701 Search) and MediaCorp (Mocca) all working towards growing the online presence and putting heavy bets on marketing and advertising online (and offline). I see places where I can work towards. Although with almost 5 years of working experience, those spent teaching seriously aren’t considered any working experience at all! This is really the saddest part as I’d learned, grew and experienced so much during those 3 years in school. And now, out in the private sector, these aren’t considered working experience. (So if you’re in or considering getting into teaching, especially as your first career, I suggest you seriously think about it. REALLY!)

And with little experience in the field of marketing (not even for the real “market”-ing), I see the need to upgrade. To get the paper qualification, since its that important. Even a graduate with good honour/master degree is having a tough time looking for suitable job, so where do I stand? Yeah, there’s still lots of job out there that doesn’t need a degree, but those aren’t going to pay me what I need. Only with a degree, will I be able to get a decent pay.

And before I can get near to where I want, I’ve to:

  1. Save a sum of money.
  2. Register for Diploma in PR and Mass Communication with IPRS once I save S$2,900. (Hopefully by Jan08 so I can get into the Feb08 intake)
  3. Take the 9-month course and get my 3rd Diploma.
  4. Save some more money.
  5. Register for Bachelor of Communication (Mass Comm) by RMIT(SIM) or with a Degree with MIS once I save S$30,000.
  6. Take the 1 or 2 year course and get my first Degree.
  7. Find a job that’ll pay me more than S$3,000 monthly and work hard.
  8. Save again and this time for my home and wedding.

So now you know my plan, if you’re one of those who’ve been asking when I’ll be getting married, well, my answer is as above. Looking at my pay slip now and the list above, I guess I’ll probably still be single when I’m over 30. Muahahahaha! So sad.

  1. you could always find a job that would pay for your professional development as well…

if that’s not possible, there are plenty of places looking for warm bodies and bright minds that would allow you to study in tandem with working for them.

    thanks for the link,
